A naturalistic body-oriented approach to healing trauma and other stress disorders Imagine this: you’ve experienced something traumatic that has left a lasting impact on your life. You might have tried talk therapy, where you delve into the thoughts, emotions, and memories associated with the event. But what if there was another approach that could tap into the wisdom of your own body to heal?
That’s where Somatic Experiencing® (SE) comes in. It’s a unique therapy that focuses on the
body’s role in healing trauma, taking a different path than traditional talk therapy. While talk therapy
focuses on the story and emotions, SE goes beyond that and includes the physical sensations and
bodily responses tied to the traumatic experience. It’s not needed to tell the whole story, or
interpret and analyse. Our bodies holds onto the memories and survival responses related to traumatic events; fight, flight, and freeze. The idea is to gently unlock the “stuck” survival energy that has become trapped in our nervous system, allowing us to complete the self-protective responses that were interrupted when the threat occurred.
During an SE session, the therapist will create a safe and supportive environment, a container
where the healing process can unfold. They will guide you in exploring the sensations in your body,
helping you reconnect with yourself on a deeper level. By slowly and gently working through the
body’s responses, the body releases the energy that has been held, gradually restoring well-being
